Two different timelines, one word

People use "timeline" for two things and then argue past each other. The first is the running order of events inside the story — when a film happens relative to the others. The second is a whole reality: a complete universe with its own past and future. Our Timeline page handles the first. This dossier handles the second.

Once you separate them, most of the confusion disappears. A film can move earlier or later in viewing order without changing which reality it belongs to.

What the Sacred Timeline really was

The Sacred Timeline was not the natural state of the universe; it was a maintained one. An organisation pruned every deviation so that a single approved history survived. That is an important distinction: the tidy chronology fans memorised for a decade was an edited cut, not the raw footage.

When the pruning stopped, nothing exploded. Branches simply stayed alive. Every alternative that used to be deleted now continues to exist somewhere, which is the mechanical reason variants, doubles and returning actors are suddenly possible.

Branches, variants and incursions

A branch is a reality that split from another at a decision point. A variant is the same person living in two branches. An incursion is what happens when two realities touch: the rule the stories keep repeating is that contact is expensive, and someone always pays.

Hold those three words steady and almost every recent film becomes readable in one pass. The plot question is rarely "what year is this?" — it is "whose version of events survives contact?"

How to watch without a chart

Release order still works best for a first pass, because the surprises were built for it. Chronological order is the better second pass: it turns the saga into a history lesson and makes the causes clearer than the shocks. Our Timeline page lets you flip between both.
